Class 4 Impact-Rated Siding, Explained

After a big Front Range hailstorm, drive any affected street and you'll see the strangest pattern in home improvement: house after house wrapped in contractor signs and insurance paperwork — and, scattered among them, homes that look like the storm skipped them entirely.

It usually didn't skip them. They were just wearing different armor. Here's what "Class 4" actually means, and why it's the phrase worth knowing before the next season, not after.

What the rating actually is

Impact ratings for exterior materials run from Class 1 to Class 4, based on standardized laboratory impact testing — steel balls dropped from calibrated heights to simulate hailstones at terminal velocity, with the material inspected afterward for cracks and ruptures. Class 4 is the top of the scale: the material withstood the largest test impacts without failing.

It's a laboratory standard, not a marketing word — which is exactly why insurers pay attention to it.

Why fiber cement gets there

James Hardie fiber cement siding — the Class 4-rated system we install — is a dense, mineral-based board. It doesn't dent like metal, crack like brittle plastics, or bruise like softer boards. The same density that earns the fire story (Class A, non-combustible — the best rating available) is what shrugs off impact. One material, rated at the top of both scales that matter in Colorado.

What it changes financially

Three things. First, the obvious: fewer storm repairs, because the walls stop being the fragile part of the house. Second, insurance: many carriers offer premium discounts for impact-rated exterior materials — ask yours, and we'll provide the product documentation your policy review needs. Third, the claims cycle itself: every storm you don't file is a deductible you don't pay and a claims history you don't accumulate.

We won't print discount percentages — they vary by carrier and policy, and anyone quoting you a number before your insurer does is guessing. The right move is one phone call to your agent with the product spec in hand.

What Class 4 is not

It's not invincibility — a direct hit from record-book hail can damage anything, and no honest contractor says otherwise. It's also not a substitute for installation quality: a Class 4 board over skipped flashing and bad detailing is armor over an open door. The rating protects against impact; only the installation protects against water. That's why our siding projects are cut and fitted to the manufacturer's spec and pass the Guard Dog quality inspection before we call them done.

How to check what's on your walls now

Most homeowners don't actually know their siding's rating — here's how to find out. Start with paperwork: if you bought the house recently, the inspection report or seller's disclosures may name the product. No paperwork? Look for a manufacturer stamp on a board end in the garage, attic, or crawlspace, where installers often leave offcuts. Still nothing? Take three photos — a straight-on of the wall, a close-up of the board profile, and any damaged edge — and bring them to a consultation; identifying siding by profile and texture is a five-minute parlor trick for anyone who installs it daily.

And a fair warning while you're looking: if what you find is a brittle, faded board that chips when the ladder bumps it, the rating question may already be answered — just not the way you hoped.

The bottom line

In most of the country, Class 4 siding is a nice-to-have. In the hail belt, it's the difference between exterior walls that participate in every storm season and walls that retire from it. If your siding is due — or a past storm already made the decision for you — it's the first spec worth asking about, and we'll show you exactly what it looks like on homes like yours at a free consultation.
